The Lewis and Clark County Detention Center has faced a critical staffing shortage for over two years, placing immense strain on both personnel and operations. This prolonged understaffing has compromised safety, increasing risks for inmates and staff alike.
Detention officers are experiencing unprecedented levels of burnout, and morale has reached an all-time low. These conditions not only endanger those within the facility but also undermine public trust in our justice system. Addressing this crisis is essential to restoring safety, stability, and dignity to those who serve and those in custody.
SCHOOL SAFETY
Protecting our children is one of the most sacred responsibilities we hold. School safety must be proactive, not reactive, and built on strong partnerships between law enforcement, educators, and families.
I’m committed to increasing visibility around school campuses, improving emergency response coordination, and supporting mental health resources that prevent crises before they occur. Every student deserves to learn in an environment that is secure, respectful, and free from fear. Together, we can ensure our schools remain places of growth, not vulnerability.

Timely law enforcement response is critical to protecting lives, de-escalating dangerous situations, and restoring public confidence.
